July 8, 2008
To Partners and Friends of Great River Greening:
Once again, Great River Greening invites youth groups, grades 7th-12th, to help us reach our goal of planting a million acorns by 2010. The 2008 Million Acorn Challenge will culminate in the Great Weigh-In and Planting Party at Afton State Park on September 20, 2008. With music, refreshments and local guests, we will award $500 cash prizes and gift certificates to the winning groups!
The Million Acorn Challenge is a unique opportunity to get young people involved in service to their community and the environment. Not only will the planted acorns benefit the next generation, but also youth will learn that they really can make a difference. School groups, youth faith-based groups, community and neighborhood youth groups, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops are all eligible to register.
Acorns can be collected from August 18th through September 17th on public or private property. Recommended parks are included in registration packets. Pre-registration is required; completed registration materials must be received no later than Friday, August 1, 2008. To request a registration packet, or for more information, contact Mark Turbak at 651.665.9500, ext. 11 or e-mail mturbak@greatrivergreening.org.
Funding for the 2008 Million Acorn Challenge is provided by 3M Foundation, Allianz Foundation for North America, Andersen Corporate Foundation, Athwin Foundation, Bailey Nurseries, Gordon & Margaret Bailey Foundation, Toro Foundation, and Xcel Energy Foundation. Major operating support for all Great River Greening programs is provided by McKnight Foundation.
