2012 SPRING EVENTS CALENDAR

Please join Great River Greening as we continue our efforts to restore native landscapes throughout the state! Individuals of all ages, families with supervised school-age children, and community and corporate groups of any size are welcome to participate in Greening's volunteer restoration events. See below for our complete Spring 2012 events schedule. Pre-registration is required, so sign up today! To register, visit our website at www.greatrivergreening.org under "Volunteer" or contact our Volunteer Manager, Josh Kriz at jkriz@greatrivergreening.org or 651-665-9500 ex. 11.

A light breakfast, snacks, and lunch is provided at all Great River Greening Community Restoration Events!

Indian Mounds Regional Park
Restoration Event
Saturday, April 21st, 8:30am - 12:30pm
Saint Paul, MN
Volunteers: FULL

Description: Indian Mounds Park contains one of the few surviving
remnants of native oak savanna in the river valley, as well as oak forest and a skunk cabbage seepage swamp. Once home to 16 burial mounds, the park is a reminder of Minnesota's history for future generations. This hauling event will cap a huge buckthorn removal effort that has transformed this into a nearly buckthorn-free park. Come see the difference your work makes!


A project of the Metro Big Rivers Habitat Partnership. Project partners
include City of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department and
the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area- National Park
Service. Funding provided by the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Fund
as recommended by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council,
Collins Electric, MSP Metro Operating Co, SKB Environmental, and
Bohlander Construction.

Pilot Knob
Invasive Removal Event

Description: Pilot Knob, a national historic site overlooking the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, is a significant place in our region's cultural and natural history. This year, volunteers will spread native prairie grass seeds and remove invasive species such as burdock and thistle. We will also talk about the exciting new plans for the site, ensuring that the area remains hospitable for a high diversity of native plants and provides habitat for grassland wildlife.

A project of the Metro Conservation Corridors Partnership. Funding
provided by the City of Mendota Heights and the Minnesota
Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended
by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources
(LCCMR).

Cherokee Bluffs Regional Park
Restoration Event

Description:Cherokee Bluffs Regional Park is located across the river
from downtown St Paul and contains rare prairie and oak savanna remnants. We will be removing invasive species like buckthorn and honeysuckle from the park to protect the rare plant and animal communities that thrive there.

include City of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department, Saint
Paul Garden Club, the West Side Bluff Task Force, and the Mississippi
National River and Recreation Area-National Park Service. Funding
provided by the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Fund as recommended
by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.

Rum River Easement Property

Description:The Rum River is one of Minnesota's designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. To preserve the natural quality of the river, landowners along this waterway have entered into easement agreements with the MN DNR to manage the land in a natural state. Help us plant trees and shrubs to restore the floodplain forest along the Rum River.

A project of the Anoka Sandplain Partnership. Project partners include
MN DNR Wild and Scenic Rivers Program, and William and Janet
Plessel. Funding is provided by William and Janet Plessel, MN DNR
Shoreland Habitat Program, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation,
and the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.
