Buckthorn transformed to fuel at biomass burner

 Fish Creek 2This winter, Great River Greening worked with District Energy in Saint Paul, MN to transform invasive buckthorn into biomass fuel.The buckthorn came from Fish Creek Open Space in Washington County, MN, where 120 volunteers removed it  from 14 acres. (See video below).District Energy brought in a chipper and hauled numerous truckloads back to the combined heat and power facility.Fish Creek Open Space is one of the largest undeveloped open spaces in the east Twin Cities metro area. Great River Greening is working to transform it into a diverse forest, oak savanna and prairie landscape.The restoration event was a project of Metro Area Program, made possible with the support from the City of Maplewood, REI, the University of St. Thomas, and the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Fund.[embed]http://youtu.be/rV8y3mlIZjQ[embed]
