Great River Greening and Spark-Y Collaborate on Youth Raingarden Planting Project
This weekend Great River Greening and Spark-Y joined volunteer supervisors to prepare for the upcoming May 22nd Holland Basin planting project. Minneapolis youth will put over 4,000 plants in the ground as part of a paid opportunity with support from the City of Minneapolis.
Holland Basin, a green space adjacent to Edison High School, was converted to treat stormwater for water quality improvement. Spark-Y and Great River Greening will lead and engage over 100 local youth in the planning and the planting of the Holland Basin rain garden.
These improvements will help to filter and treat water flowing into the basin from the surrounding streets. This project creates a real-world learning lab for environmental topics of native habitat, water quality, and stormwater management.
Great River Greening is proud to partner with Spark-Y, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit dedicated to its mission of youth empowerment through three branches: hands-on learning, urban agriculture lab, and youth pathways.
