Prairie Restoration

Prairies used to dominate Minnesota’s natural landscape, covering nearly 20 million acres of land. A prairie’s healthy soil, diverse wildlife and plant species, and ability to filter water laid an excellent foundation for our state’s rich agricultural industry.

But with only 2% of Minnesota’s prairies remaining, Great River Greening and our volunteers work hard to protect, expand, and restore remnants of this incredibly diverse habitat. From blooming wildflowers to pollinating butterflies to large mammals, prairie ecosystems offer unmatched environmental benefits. They protect our water, sustain native wildlife, and even fight the harmful impacts of climate change.

Our experienced technicians may use the following prairie restoration techniques as part of our projects:

·       Turf removal

·       Prescribed burns

·       Invasive plant removal

·       Seed sowing

·       Tree, grass, and wildflower planting
