Just outside of St. Peter, 48 volunteers launched four “Floating Wetlands” and planted nearly 2,500 seedlings along an eroding shoreline. Hallett’s Pond is a popular spot for fishing and boating, but suffers from high levels of pollution. The floating wetlands are constructed from non-woven PET plastic fibers derived from BPA free recycled plastic drinking bottles (resulting in less plastic in landfills). They’re part of a demonstration to improve water quality and establish wildlife habitat – two priorities for lake residents and visitors – in a new, innovative way. The missing piece? Volunteers. Our volunteers planted the floating wetlands in record time, quickly moving along to native seedlings along the shoreline. Because of their efforts, the pond will experience lower levels of pollution (nitrogen and phosphorous) and a robust, diverse aquatic wildlife .CHECK OUT photos from the event.
